The Shelf Story
Dinner WITH FRIENDS
The winter of 2014, several friends went on a ski trip to Park City Utah. On the second night, over dinner and beers, Stefan started talking about how the food industry works as an ancient marketplace.
"Invoices from our vendors frequently come printed on dot matrix printers." -Stefan Kalb
A good round of laughs lead to a deep conversation as to why? Why would the food industry be so far behind? The food industry is so large and so impactful, why isn't it leading with the most advanced technology? Moreover, the waste of food and human hours is overwhelming, what can be done?
As Bede and Stefan discussed further into the evening, the idea of Shelf was born. Could we create a platform that enables retailers to buy food and eliminate significant waste? Could we create a platform that eliminates redundant busy work between vendors and retailers? Could we create a more perfect marketplace?
This question has inspired us to create shelf. This question drives us to ally with our friends at restaurants, cafeterias, grocery stores, cafes, and food distributors.
